TEAM EL TERRY CELEBRATES ITS CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

Occasionally, the Thoroughbred industry’s resolve to recognize its “unsung heroes” – grooms, hot walkers, stable hands, exercise riders – makes it easy to overlook the individual and collective hearts that beat beneath the veneer of spectacular racetrack achievements.

On Monday, March 2, the Tampa Bay Downs Division of the Race Track Chaplaincy of America held its 23rd annual “Hearts Reaching Out” Golf Tournament, Dinner and Charity Auction benefit. Bettering the lives of backstretch workers is the goal of the RTCA, which strives to minister to their spiritual, emotional, physical, social and educational needs.

Tampa Bay Downs Division Chaplain Ruben Columna makes the rounds of the backside daily, offering the promise of redemption and informing workers of the chaplaincy’s services, which include continuing education, Bible study and help in dealing with family and health-related issues.

“Each individual I come across has different needs, whether they are spiritual, emotional or financial,” Columna said recently. “Some are trying to make money to send to their families. We try to give them guidance and help fill their spiritual needs through the word of God.”

As with any business in which success is often correlated with financial gain, participants in the “Sport of Kings” often confront stress in the workplace. That’s why the Oldsmar division of the RTCA provides continuous recreational opportunities for the masses.

Beginning Jan. 9, soccer games – or “The Beautiful Game,” as it is described in other parts of the world – were played each Monday and Tuesday afternoon on the backside involving four teams, followed by league semifinal matches on March 5 and the league championship on March 9.

CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH ACTION BETWEEN TEAM EL TERRY (ORANGE) AND TEAM DELACOUR

Team El Terry won the title with a shootout victory against Team Delacour. But results took a backseat to the spirit of teamwork, healthy competition and cooperation forged on the pitch, after the task of caring for the track’s equine population was completed.

TEAM EL TERRY LOOKING SHARP BEFORE THE FINAL!

We salute the players who gave their all throughout the season, as they do every day to elevate the sport they love and bestow glory upon God!
