Tampa Bay Downs track announcer Richard Grunder will return to the booth Wednesday, Dec. 21 after missing the first seven racing days of the 2011-12 season for health reasons.
Filling in for Grunder at the start of the meeting will be Bobby Neuman, the announcer at Calder Casino & Race Course in Miami.
Grunder, whose trademark call of “In the clear and strictly the one to catch” is known to Tampa Bay Downs regulars and simulcast viewers across the country, has never missed a day since joining Tampa Bay Downs as its announcer in 1984.
“My dad, who was a railroad worker, told me years ago I would be a really rich man if I was able to go to a job I liked every day,” Grunder said two years ago. “He said very few people are able to do that, and to be able to go to work and thoroughly enjoy what I do is the most rewarding aspect of my job.”
Besides his duties as track announcer, Grunder is the host of Tampa Bay Downs’ popular Morning Glory Club, where he interviews top jockeys, trainers and track personalities each Saturday morning through Tampa Bay Derby weekend. This season’s Morning Glory Club begins Dec. 31.
Live racing will begin on Dec 3, 2011 with a first race post time of 12:27pm for the eleven race card.
