Tampa Bay Downs is proud to announce its affiliation with TROT, the Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa. Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the safe retirement, rehabilitation, and adoption of Tampa’s racing Thoroughbreds.

These athletes are valuable assets to their owners and trainers while producing results on the track. As some reach the end of their careers, unforeseen circumstances force decisions to be made to assure their future safety. TROT recognizes the potential and worth that retiring Thoroughbreds offer, and is able to assist them in transitioning to the next phase of their lives. With the support of owners, trainers, and the community, we can raise awareness about the importance of Thoroughbred retirement and make a difference in the plight of unwanted horses.

Tampa Bay Downs is committed to organizations that provide lifetime care of thoroughbreds once their racing careers are over and routinely donates money to such retirement and retraining facilities as the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.  Founded over two decades ago, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation's mission is clear and simply stated: to save Thoroughbred horses no longer able to compete on the racetrack from possible neglect, abuse and slaughter. The TRF is about more than helping horses in need. Early in the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation’s history, Founder and Chairman of the Board Monique S. Koehler negotiated a milestone agreement with the State of New York Department of Correctional Services. In exchange for land use and labor at the state’s Walkill Correctional Facility, the TRF would design, staff and maintain a vocational training program in equine care and management for inmates. There are currently two TRF facilities in Florida, both located in Ocala. Click HERE to learn more about the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.

Through Charity Days, Tampa Bay Downs donates money to the Florida Thoroughbred Charities, which is the charitable arm of the Florida Thoroughbred industry.  Since 1990, the Florida Thoroughbred Charities have strengthened and supported the Florida community by raising over $3.5 million for charitable organizations within the Thoroughbred industry, Ocala/Marion County and the State of Florida. Tampa Bay Downs also contributes to the Grayson Jockey Club Research Foundation, a leading non-profit foundation committed to the advancement of research to enhance the health and soundness of horses of all breeds. Please click

Additionally, Tampa Bay Downs voluntarily participates in the Equine Injury Database Program through the Jockey Club. The Equine Injury Database catalogues any and all equine injuries that occur at Tampa Bay Downs and submits them to a national database in order to provide the cause of injury and to take remedial action so as to minimize injuries in the future on both a local and national level.
