Ronald Allen, Sr., who first saddled a horse at the Oldsmar oval in 1960, is the third leading trainer at Tampa Bay Downs for the 2007-2008 racing season. He has saddled 23 winners, 14 second-place finishers and 20 third-place finishers from 108 attempts for $284,020 in purses in 94 days of racing.
In the week of April 1 through April 6, Allen’s horses won four races, came in second once and shown once from nine attempts. Much of his success has come with his sons Ron Allen, Jr. and Mike Allen in the irons; last year, Mike Allen booted home his 1,500th winner at Tampa Bay Downs. Ron Allen, Sr. said of his son’s achievement, “He’s a good rider who deserves it. He works hard. He puts in a lot of time and deserves every win. Every father should have a son like him. He’s a good family man.”
“We have some pretty nice stock again, and that's what it takes,” Allen has said of his 25-horse stable.
Allen, 64, took 14th place here in the 2006-2007 campaign and 4th place in the 2005-2006 season. Allen is enjoying his recent success, and the Kentucky native said he has no retirement plans; but when he does give up training, he plans to live full-time in his Clearwater home and enjoy the races at Tampa Bay Downs.
