Pablo Morales is a 22-year-old native of Peru who in his three years of riding Thoroughbreds in the United States has achieved career milestones that veteran jockeys dream of. While living in Peru, Morales graduated from the same jockey school that also turned out top riders Edgar Prado and Rafael Bejarano.
While still an apprentice rider, Morales piloted The Daddy to victory in the 2005 Grade II $750,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs; it is the event that Morales cites as his favorite moment as a jockey. In his first year of riding at the Oldsmar oval, Morales scored 58 victories, including a win in the Wayward Lass Stakes.
Pablo Morales gained an interest in horses through his family in Lima. “My father was a trainer, my uncle’s a trainer, they were all jockeys- all of my brothers, all of my cousins, they’re all jockeys in Peru. I had no choice!” the 19-year-old laughs. Morales says that he’s glad that he moved his tack to Tampa Bay Downs because, “It’s a really nice place. A lot of people come out, and it feels good. It’s not boring because there are a lot of people here screaming, so it everything more exciting.” When Morales isn’t in the irons, he enjoys playing the guitar and going to the movies. He has returned to the Oldsmar oval after a two year hiatus for teh 2009-2010 meet.
